December 31, 2020– Overdue Update

Hello dear friends and family!

It’s hard to believe the last time I wrote an update was way back in September. Now that Bo’s appointments are more spaced out, life is starting to feel a bit more normal. It’s hard to let myself sink into the “normal” feeling, but I’m trying to embrace it as best as I can.

Bo had his routine clinic appointment on December 14th and it went well. On the outside, we see a crazy, energetic 2 year old running around. It’s always reassuring to see that confirmed by his lab results. We also have a huge praise–Bo’s platelets continue to increase! They were up to 185 at his most recent appointment which is the highest they’ve been in 15 months! 200 is the low end of the normal range and we are inching closer and closer!

We’ve continued to learn a bit more about his platelets and why they’ve remained low and fluctuated. It’s been explained to us as an auto-immune response by his body in attacking some of his platelets. It’s something we’ll be aware of, but nothing that should hold him back in life.

In early December, we received another letter from Bo’s donor in Germany. It was such a sweet surprise to hear how he’s doing and to learn more about him. He is doing well and enjoys spending time with his family (parents, brother and twin sister). The more we learn about him, the more real he becomes to us. For so long we’ve wondered who this wonderful young man is who gave his marrow to our Boaz. We will have the opportunity to exchange contact information in September 2021 as long as we both agree to it. We, of course, want to know him, so the ball will be in his court. Until then, we will continue to exchange anonymous letters via the marrow registry. It’s so hard writing anonymously as there is much we wish to say and share, but I have come to realize that it’s better this way. I feel far too emotional still at this point and I fear my gratitude and excitement to know him could feel overwhelming. I’m hoping that by the time we are able to exchange information (maybe even a Zoom call?), I’ll be able to calmly articulate just how grateful we are to him for the gift he gave to our son and our family.

As 2020 comes to a close, we wanted to thank you all, once again, for your continued prayers, love, and support. We cannot even begin to imagine what these last 2 years would have looked like without you all and are so grateful for how you’ve stuck by us as we’ve navigated this post-treatment life and healing. We will never forget your kindness and love.

We will update again after Bo’s appointment in March! Until then, much love to all of you!

  4. We are so happy Bo and your family are doing well! He truly is a miracle boy. We relate with you as we have a grandson turning 3 on March 29th and a grand daughter, his sister who is in grade 1. We can’t imagine going through what your family has experienced! I can certainly understand your excitement in the possibility of knowing the donor! What an amazing gift; the gift of life. Yet God is the One who grants life and sustains it. Wishing you and your family a Wonderful New Year in 2021!
